I always thought that establishing new relationships would be the most difficult part of my MBA, but that was before I encountered Accountingâ⬠¦and Quantitative Analysisâ⬠¦and Financial Managementâ⬠¦and Managerial Economics. Oh, dear lord. I find myself staring at my workload, sometimes, while trying to come to grips with the fact that I have never done so many different things at the same timeââ¬âmany of which are completely new to me. But that was the reason I wanted to do this program in the first place, yes? Of course the answer to that is yes. I applied to the Hult MBA to get outside my comfort zone, and try and do completely different things to exponentially growââ¬âpersonally and professionally. And yes, I hope it pads my bottom line (eventually), and also increases my stick-ability within corporations (Im already talking like an MBA graduate). But, once youre in the business school zone it can be a lot harder than you ever thought it would be. And that, in and of itself, can be a challenge. So many of us come from environments where we excelled academically and professionally, so putting ourselves through school again might seem logical on some levels, but that doesnââ¬â¢t make the inevitable challenges easier. For a time, my hesitation about doing an MBA was due to the fact that I didnt want to be the ââ¬Å"man in a suitâ⬠, or the stereotypical image of an MBA graduate. But now, there are different ways to approach and apply an MBA. Being on campus with a diverse group of people can allow you to explore these different approaches. The MBA is not as academic as other masters programs; at Hult itââ¬â¢s surprising just how much ââ¬Å"hands onâ⬠experience gets imparted in the classroom. Professors relate everything back to the ââ¬Å"real world.â⬠In light of being out of a job for a year, this professional insight will make it that much easier to rejoin the working masses. So after six months of business school, do I feel smarter? Yes, I have to say I do. I feel comfortable on campus, and the people Ive met are so diverse, and the conversations so valuable, that I feel like Ive learned more in the last six months than I did in the last six years. In business school, you want to pick up valuable knowledge, and be able to apply it once you leave. More importantly, you want somebody to pay you for being able to apply this knowledge. For a lot of us, that metric is the one that counts the most. I joined school as a means to an end. Judging by the last six months, things have fallen into place. And Iââ¬â¢ve definitely learned many things along the way. Now that Iââ¬â¢m in the second Module, it almost feels like old hat now. Iââ¬â¢m used to the sounds and scents of campus. When I walk into the building everything is familiar, where it used to be completely alien. Students walk past, and we greet each other with pleasantries; I no longer react like a jittery deer in headlights. I became comfortable far more quickly than I ever thought I would. Things that were terrifying to me before, I now approach with confidence. If I reach a point where I become complacent in my abilities, Hult throws out so many additional challenges and experiments that getting bored is completely out of the question. Once it had snowed the night before, and getting to his apartment to longer than normal, as the buses inched their way past snowbanks and awkwardly parked cars. But the sun made everything glisten, and the snow still had a pure look to it, which I knew would be gone by the following morning. I saw him Tuesdays. The Atlantic, July-August 2014) Microsofts Spellchecker Microsofts language experts also track word requests, as well as frequently corrected words, to assess whether those words should be added to the Speller dictionary (Speller is the trademark name of Microsofts spell-checker). One recent request was pleather, meaning a plastic faux leather, which was added because of a lobbying effort by the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. If youve got the latest goods from Microsoft, pleather shouldnt get a red squiggly.In other cases, real words are intentionally kept out of the programs dictionary. A calender is a machine used for a specialized manufacturing process. But most people see calender as a misspelling of calendar. The wordsmiths at Microsoft have decided to keep calender out of the programs dictionary, figuring that at the end of the day its more useful to fix so many misspelled calendars, than it is to cater to the sensibilities of a small subset of the population who happen to know of, and want to write about, calend ers. Collins, 2008) The Limitations of Spellcheckers In fact, you have to be quite good at spelling and reading in order to use a spellchecker effectively. Typically, if you have misspelled a word the spellchecker will offer a list of alternatives. Unless your initial attempt is reasonably close to the correct spelling, you are unlikely to be offered sensible alternatives, and, even if you are, you have to be able to make sense of what is on offer. You and your pupils also have to be aware of the limitations of spellcheckers. First, you may correctly spell a word but simply use the wrong one; for example, After I had eaten my super I went straight to bed. A spellchecker will not spot that it should be supper not super (did you spot the mistake?). Second, the spellchecker does not recognize some perfectly acceptable words.
